The Lookout Service from Toronto share their thoughts...

The Lookout Service

Out of pure chance I got to know the Lookout Service (Stergios Kalochoridis on vocals and guitar, and Robert Ragazzo on drums) and their work. Their strong guitar and drum combinations as well as their gritty vocals make the Lookout Service a pair of artists to look for.
Reaad on, Stergios tells all.

Q: How did you first get into music?
We first got into music in high school, from just hanging around the band room a lot. There were a few bands there and one of them needed a bass player, so I decided I would learn so I could join. Indie-rock bands like The Strokes and the Arctic Monkeys were some really early influences on me.

Q: Did someone inspire you to make music the way you do?
I was inspired a lot by the way Jack White makes music. I feel as though as an artist he has a “shoot from the hip” mentality that he takes with him into recording sessions and on stage. I really resonated with this approach to music because I appreciate the human element of playing an instrument, and that includes the good and the bad. Mistakes or “wrong notes” can give music character and the search for perfection when playing music can sometimes blur the meaning of what the artist is trying to express.

Q. Is your inner world feeding your creativity?
I feel like creativity does come from within to a certain extent. You got to look up once in a while and take everything around you in, so that you can understand your own feelings about the world, I guess.

Q. What is your creative process like?
The creative process has always been very loose for me. I draw my inspiration from simple everyday things, phrases people say to me or things that I see. I never properly learned how to read or write music, so communicating my ideas to band mates was always a challenge. Rob and I seemed to have found a natural chemistry from playing with each other for years, so the upcoming batch of songs are a kind of reflection of how the two of us just play off each other. Usually, I’ll come in with the foundation of a song, and then the two of us hammer at it until we’ve got something good. Once we’ve got a good base, we can take it to the recording studio and begin polishing the track, layering effects and tracks until we feel like we’ve got something special.

Q. How would you describe the music that you typically create?
Loud, Raw, Expressive, Volatile and Suave. ;)

Q. What is your favorite song to perform?
My favourite song to perform right now would have to be the title track off of our latest EP, I’m Not Going Anywhere.

Q. Which famous musicians do you admire?
7. The White Stripes, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Reignwolf, Gary Clark Jr, Kings of Leon, The Black Keys, Alabama Shakes, Foo Fighters, Royal Blood, Death From Above 1979, July Talk, Sam Fender, The Dirty Nil, The Vaccines, Kasabian, The Killers, The Fratellis, Oasis, The Hives, Muse, Arcade Fire, Cage The Elephant, Foals, Green Day, and many more.

Q. Who would you most like to collaborate with?
Any of the artists I just mentioned, it would be an absolute dream to work with them.

Q. What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?
I went to culinary school, so if I wasn’t pursuing music I’d probably be in a kitchen.

Q. How does your work comment on current social or political issues?
We like to think that our music is very open to interpretation based on the listener. I don’t feel as though it’s my job to make sure each listener gets what I’m trying to say, I prefer that interpret the music in the way that makes most sense to them.

Q. What’s next for you?
We’re currently playing shows all around the Greater Toronto Area, so make sure you follow us on social media @thelookoutservice to stay up to date with upcoming shows.

Q. What is one message you would give to your fans?
Stay safe, keep working hard, and we can’t wait to jam with all of you at the next show!

Canadian Singer/Songwriter Collin Clowes Captures the Moments that Matter in Reminiscent New Single, “Polaroid”
Click on image to view/listen to track!

Collin Clowes - Polaroid

The new single off of the debut EP, Sleepy, the seven-song 2021 release is a collection of heartwarming songs that feature delicate instrumental compositions over meaningful lyrics to create a sound that’s as familiar as it is new. This body of music is the singular vision of Clowes, who not only plays on every instrument, but also works through the painstaking effort of production, mixing, and mastering.
Ami Leigh from UK

Ami Leigh

Every so often you find an artist that triggers your music sense and you start to listen to their work over and over. One such artists is Ami Leigh, a Musician/Singer/Songwriter from Bishop Auckland, UK and Ami’s Autumn Breeze did just that. Ami's work is very much worth a listen, I’m sure you’ll all agree with me.
I had a short chat with her, read on.

Q: How did you first get into music?
Since from as early as I can remember, I have always listened to music, starting with obviously listening to the music my parents listened to. I did the usual childhood hobbies, like dance and taekwondo but I actually didn't start playing guitar until I was 15 and it just felt so natural to me and I was lucky enough to get a college placement to continue in education alongside studying music.

Q: Did someone inspire you to make music the way you do?
I think I have been inspired by my musical heroes the most, and with the help of my guitar teacher who is also my producer, I am able to create my own music, the way I want to! Which in my case, means that I can move into different genres without the fear of management blocking my artistic creativity.

Q. Is your inner world feeding your creativity?
Most of my music is created by watching and listening to other artists work and personal accounts, looking at general life situations and also watching tv.

Q. What is your creative process like?
It just depends on the individual song, some I had the melody before the lyrics and others I had the lyrics before the melody. I tend to have to alter both to fit either way.

Q. How would you describe the music that you typically create?
At the moment, I am tending to lean towards Rock, however, all my tracks begin acoustically and I try to keep the acoustic guitar in them somewhere. I am trying to not stick to one genre as I want to be open to all and have recently collaborated with a predominately Punk Artist and also a Nashville Country Artist.

Q. What is your favorite song to perform?
It varies depending on the venue or even how I feel that day. Sometimes, it will be certain covers that are particularly unusual to hear covered or it could be one of my own original songs. I obviously really enjoy getting a crowd singing along, so the popular sing-a-long tracks doing the circuits, are always exciting to perform.

Q. Which famous musicians do you admire?
There are so many I admire, I could list loads, but I will give you the ones that really made a difference to me: George Michael, Avril Lavigne, Muse, Artic Monkeys, John Mayer, Foo Fighters, The Cure, Pink Floyd, James Blunt.

Q. Who would you most like to collaborate with?
That's another really difficult question because I am willing to collaborate with anybody, no matter whether they are famous or not, as long as the music works for us.

Q. If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be?
I would love to open for John Mayer and James Blunt.

Q. What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?
I would probably be volunteering more at my local community radio station, as I dont get much spare time at the moment to commit to doing a full show like I used to. I'd love to own my own music related business, something to do with promoting unsigned artists.

Q. How does your work comment on current social or political issues?
I tend to steer clear away from Political Issues. As I mentioned earlier, the majority of my originals are fictional and in no way reflect my own personal life, with the one exception so far, that being Guitar Case. My original song Black Dog is about musicians dealing with depression and my original song Dark Soul is about a relationship coming to an end because of a controlling partner.

Q. What’s next for you?
I am releasing another original in the New Year, which is actually the first song I ever wrote and it is called Brainstorm and is about the confusion felt when you are personally dealing with mental health Issues or in my case, I am autistic and sometimes life can be very overwhelming and I often suffer with sensory overload.

Q. What is one message you would give to your fans?
Well first of all, thank you to everyone who has support me and also to everyone, support Local Musicians and Venues and if you are a Musician, support each other as much as you can by attending gigs, streaming songs and also if you are a Recording Artist, support the Radio Stations who give your tracks airtime and include them on playlists.

New single by The Backlash - "Rise" (shoegaze garage, out November 16th)
Click on image to view/listen to track!

The Backlash - Rise

Rise is one of the 5 new songs The Backlash managed to write and record during the lockdown, and is for sure the one in which the garage rock influences of the shoegazers from Milan are more highlighted.
Rise wasn't born out of thoughts, but from a sudden feeling: "it's like when you're driving alone, playing loud music and totally lost in your own mind, away from the real world so that you cannot even remember your route. And you have a revelation, all at once you're conscious of yourself, of where you are and how you reach that point of your life. It's about feeling suddenly alive (again), willing to rise above all the mud."

Smile - BUSM

Canadian Dustin Cormier (Bass Player / Vocalist); Shawn Cormier (Guitarist / Vocalist); Michael Loyal (Drummer) released new Single "Smile"
Smile is a riff-rock blues vibe reticent of Jimi Hendrix and/or Stevie Ray Vaughn. Shawn's high-pitched vocal added more of a pop sound to the jazzy instrumentals of the rhythm section, played by Dustin (bass player) and Mike (Drummer).
So Much 4 Gravity, tells all...

So Much 4 Gravity

For a while now I've been spinning tracks by So Much 4 Gravity, indie band from Belgium. Their strong and original sound will intrigue the indie music lover to look for them next time they need a good music fix.
Currently So Much 4 Gravity is in the studio compiling their new work, hopefully they'll send me a preview soon. I managed to steal a little of Wouter Vlaminckx's; songwriter, singer and guitarist in So Much 4 Gravity, time for a chat.

Q: How did you first get into music?
My mum and dad had a big record collection ranging from Vivaldi and Beethoven to the Beatles and The Kinks, just to name a few, which I listened to countless times when I was a little kid, and from then onwards I never stopped listening to all sorts of music. And at the age of 14 or so, my mum gave me her old guitar to practice on and I taught myself how to play chords etc. My best friend, who was classically trained, had already picked up the electric guitar and he was always one or more steps ahead of me, already playing Jimi Hendrix and stuff so I picked up a lot from him too.

Q: Did someone inspire you to make music the way you do?
There are a few bands that have inspired me endlessly, not necessarily sonically but certainly in creative terms. I’m talking about Pavement, Frank Zappa, Radiohead, The Beatles, Pixies, Massive Attack … Also the ‘comedian’ Andy Kaufman has been an influence, in the way he blended comedy and reality, you can (hopefully) find that in my lyrics sometimes as well.

Q. Is your inner world feeding your creativity?
It definitely is! Black Ocean for example, one of our forthcoming singles (we are in the studio recording it as we speak), tries to express the feeling of an ending (inspired by the break up with my previous girlfriend with the surname Black), a sort of elusive apocalypse in which you are about to drown, not knowing what the future will bring, probably something very dark and bleak. And a while ago someone in my family whom I love dearly quite unexpectedly tried to get me into Christian rock music, and that inspired me to write another new song called Satan is toast.

Q. What is your creative process like?
Generally I just start playing random chord progressions on my acoustic guitar while singing some incomprehensible lyrics to it. When I’m lucky I end up with the start of a song and sometimes even with a complete one! Then I demo it at home, just me and my guitar, and I send it to the band members with a few instructions when I have ideas about certain arrangements, and then when they like it and there is a sort of consensus that we should develop it further, we start working on it during rehearsals and it slowly evolves into a So Much 4 Gravity song.

Q. How would you describe the music that you typically create?
Catchy, surprising, old but new. Epic sometimes. Created with a lot of feeling.

Q. What is your favorite song to perform?
Playing Satan is Toast live is a hilarious, almost religious experience although it has a kind of sad conclusion, and also When You Are Not Around is one of my favourites, we do this Pixies/Nirvana quit-loud dynamic, it bursts into this wall of sound. And Seven Days, another single we are currently recording, when I get it right it gives me goosebumps while singing it – it’s about dropping my kids off at school on a Friday morning, knowing I won’t be seeing them for another week.

Q. Which famous musicians do you admire?
Mauro Pawlowski, he’s one of my favourite Belgian musicians, Captain Beefheart, Frank Zappa, Beethoven, Jimi Hendrix. Damn, most of these are dead already…

Q. Who would you most like to collaborate with?
Very difficult question! There are so many musicians I value a lot… let’s see… I’ll pick a living one haha… I wouldn’t mind doing a song with Billie Eilish, Trentemoller and Johnny Greenwood. Hahahaha just imagine that! They’d be like “So Much 4 WHO??”

Q. If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be?
Half Moon Run, just discovered them, they’ve got excellent songs and a great sound, aren’t they Canadian?

Note by 829: Yes, from Montreal Quebec

Q. What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?
Being frozen in cryosleep only to be woken up in something like 2321. If massive power failures haven’t killed me yet by then.

Q. How does your work comment on current social or political issues?
During the writing of the songs for our first EP (Gotta Get Out Of This Town) I was concerned a lot with the state the world was in (I still am), hence (ironic) songs like Tweet now thnk tomorrow and Presents 4 the rich. You’ll know what I mean when you listen to the lyrics

Q. What’s next for you?
Working my daytime job to pay for our studio recordings, and trying to find promotors and bookers for our music.

Q. What is one message you would give to your fans?
Listen to your heart. Even Roxette knew that!

Note by 829: I second that, Marie got this part right...

Independent artist based in Israel Vinyl Arch Rodeo recently released a 3rd single ‘See the Sun’, a classic-indie-90's style rock song, from the debut album Herodotus, that will be released in April.
See the Sun is a type of a stadiums’ anthem; it was written mainly as a desire for escapism and ambition to find a safe place, but it attracted a great deal of emotions. It’s got the right building up, inspiring lyrics, surrounding, and comforting harmonies, that leads up to an explosion that makes you feel that you can do anything you want if you only put your heart into it.

The Metal Byrds, coming up band from Texas shares thoughts...

The Metal Byrds

For a while now I've been spinning tracks from The Metal Byrds, a band from Austin Texas with a strong Rock sound and several albums under their belt. I know they are now working on something new with lots of studio time. I managed to steal a little of their time for a little chat with Suzanne the lead singer.

Q: How did you first get into music?
Personally, I’ve been into music since a child. Growing up in the 80s in London England, music was everywhere. The punk and pop scenes were huge, and I remember singing along to the radio as a kid.

Q: Did someone inspire you to make music the way you do?
Yes, Sly Rye, The Metal Byrds guitar player had these great songs when I first met him. He would play some fantastic guitar riffs, and I told him, let’s turn them into something, and our sound is what we got. He is the real inspiration of the band.

Q. Is your inner world feeding your creativity?
Uh, I would say inner and outer. I take a lot of my inspiration for my creativity from things that happen in my everyday life, especially my interactions with other people I come across, at work, at home, when I’m out an about. But the majority is from how I feel and my personal thoughts.

Q. What is your creative process like? Myself and Sly Rye do all the writing. It’s a collaborative effort that I could definitely not do without him. He is my muse and vise versa. We bounce ideas off each other until something sticks out, then we follow that rabbit hole until a song we feel is great emerges.

Q. How would you describe the music that you typically create?
We are 100% a ROCK band. Our style is rock with influences of heavy metal, punk, pop and grunge with a sprinkle of hair metal… lol.

Q. What is your favorite song to perform?
By far, Machine Man! It’s such a rocker, and we have a good handle on that song.

Q. Which famous musicians do you admire?
The whole band loves KISS. We are all huge KISS fans. We also love Journey, Heart, April Wine, Iron Maiden and Pat Benatar. You can hear all those influences in our music.

Q. Who would you most like to collaborate with? WOW, if we could, it would be a dream come true to do a collab with KISS, for sure!

Q. If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be?
KISS, again… lol.

Note: When you guys open for KISS, I expect an invite !

Q. What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?
I think just like anybody, we would all be working, living life, trying to survive in this rough world. We all already do that, it’s just we have music to fall back on and be an escape from our everyday problems.

Q. How does your work comment on current social or political issues?
The majority of our music doesn’t. We have made a conscious decision to not be political or controversial in any way. Our music is just music, about our personal thoughts and feelings. We, however, did write a song, the title track of our latest EP, called Life In 20. It was a recollection of all the stuff that was happening in 2020. It was a crazy year, and what better inspiration to write a song about!

Q. What’s next for you?
We are currently working on our next album, which will be our 4th release. Not sure yet if it will be another EP or a full length album, but we shall see.

Q. What is one message you would give to your fans?
We would like to say, Thank you for your support for our music and our band. We cannot and would not do this without the support of people who belive in us and the music we are making. We would also like to say to keep supporting Indie artists, because all of us are working hard, and doing everything by ourselves, and we all need support!
